METAMORPHOSIS

belly tank lakester

This project began as an attempt to digitally model a 1950’s vintage land speed record car called a “Lakester” from a series of published pictures found on the web. As my fascination with this clever solution to speed grew, the model became more detailed. I found the transformation of a fuel tank into a car a unique work of utilitarian genius. Once the model was completed, I found other ways for this car to transform.
Inspired by pure form of the tank body, I used its shape as a base for other transformations to take place. As the theme of change can also be described over time, animation was implemented as part of my work. The conversion of the Lakester into different specific purpose vehicles allowed me to play with mechanisms and space. As the transformations were to honor the original form, the function of the vehicle is communicated by the changes to that original shape.
